9/11/73 is indeed a fine show. Not only is it the best performance of the September "Horns" tour (the music performed on this tour is generally fair at best, several of the shows are difficult to listen to), it's among the better shows of 1973. The sound quality is excellent, marred only by an unpleasant patch during the spectacular performance of Morning Dew. Perhaps not quite on par with very best performances during November and December of the year, it's still packed with some fantastic highlights.

The segue between China/Rider though quite mellow, is still very well jammed, and the slightly abbreviated Playin' in the Band (17 minutes) features a really cool Garcia wah-wah passage.

In general, I think the addition of Martin Fiero on Sax and Joe Ellis on trumpet had a detrimental effct on the music of this tour. I don't think they practiced enough, and a multiple piece horn section might have been too cumbersome for these live Grateful Dead performances. This show is the exception, though. Their contribution during WRS is pretty amazing, making for one of the most interesting and jazziest performances of the song ever.

This is a show for the Philophiles! Phil is playing extremely well throughout the second set, and particularly during a rather cool performance of Dark Star. The 17 minute pre-verse segment is a bit mellow, but there are a few really nice passages. Post-verse, the song is driven entirely by Phil, detonating "shock and awe" ordinance that leads to a unique and extraordinary performance of Morning Dew. This is one of my favorites of the year.

I agree, this is the only show that i will go back and listen to from this month and even that is rare. I don't think any of these shows, even 9-11 can hold a candle to what would come in Nov/Dec, so that is where you can usually find me chowing down if autumn '73 is on the menu.

Agreed. Elbow, are you going to Railroad Earth tonight? I'll be at the Porter around 7:30. Then I'm off Sunday early to do a quickie ski trip to NC.

Go Falcons! I am still not used to having winning ATL sports teams, not counting my Awesome Braves, of course.

Have fun at the Porter (if they have the Highlands Winter Ale from Asheville. NC, i highly recommend. i bet it would go great with the porn dog!) and the show. RRE did a great show on 1-1-11. Much more like a 2005 setlist than what they were doing in the fall. Hope they keep some of this stuff in the rotation for tonight.

I'm hoping that the bass is not too overpowering as they are prone to do. I enjoyed the 1-1-11 also. I am hoping for another version, or may actually get the SBD download.

Have fun, and happy New Year!

This counts as my first official hijack of 2011.
